What Causes Persistent Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: I feel fine. I even walked two miles today. Starting about 36 hours ago, I have diarrhea but it is mostly blood that comes out. I heard that bright red is better than dark red. I would consider mine to be on the brighter side. I will be 54 in three weeks. How long should I wait until I see a doctor?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
It looks like you are having an attack of stomach infection leading to blood dysentrey. Blood dysentery is when there is intestinal inflammation, especially in the colon, that can lead to severe diarrhea with mucus or blood in the stools.

As you are maintaining a high level of personal fitness, you have the stamina to do your two miles walks. It is suggested that you see your doctors right away and take medications to stop your blood dysentery. At the same time you must take enough fluids and fresh juices to keep you hydrated. Your physical activity might not have drained you but it will surely cause loss of water and electrolytes and this can be checked by having adequate intake.

It is said that if diarrhea (with or without blood) continues for more than 24 hours then a visit to the doctors is essential to know the cause and control it with medications and oral rehydration solutions.

A dark blood in stools might be due to a more chronic or serious cause like cancers and therefore said to be more of a concern. However any blood diarrhea for more than 24 hours might also be considered as a health concern requiring medical attention.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
