Posted on Wed, 10 Dec 2014
Question: My boyfriend has peptic ulcers and frequently has bouts of diarrhia, vomiting and nausea which last for several days . He is a heavy pot smoker but my research has indicated that the jury is out on whether pot helps or hurts this medical situation. Any opinion? he is an insulin dependent diabetic Type 11 and obese.

Brief Answer:
worsens ulcer

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I understand your concern.Smoking Pot will worsen the ulcer in stomach and increase bleeding. This is because smoke irritates the gastric mucosa and helps or aggravates an ulcer.Secondly, it increases hunger by producing more acid in the stomach, which again damages the stomach mucous layer.

So,I would say "Yes" it hurts this medical situation.I would advice him to stop smoking immediately and start a healthy diet.

Hope i answered your query.Feel free to ask more.

thank you for your response which was confirming what I was thinking and researched on the web. My concern about hearty use of pot is not supported by his doctors who are aware (per boyfriend) of his pot use. They do address obesity and suggested giving up coffee, spicy foods and nsaids (which he does not use). Why would they not suggest giving up fatty foods such as bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, lamb chops and stewed beef? I have read that these are also hard to digest and also (obviously) not good for an overweight diabetic. It is possible that he is not listening to them, also with heeding my suggestions, but his discharge report (after endoscopy) did not include recommending eliminating the above-mentioned foods. I know they are a poor choice for high cholestrol and obesity, but can they irritate gastic (bleeding) ulcers as well?

Hello Mam,

Thank You for writing back with your queries.

Since your boyfriend is obese,he should avoid any high fat food for the rest of his life.Your doctor ,might not have mentioned this may be because these are general stuffs people are already aware of.

No,these food do not irritate gastric mucosa, but yes they might make him put on,which we do not want. The more obese he is,the more worse it will be to control his diabetes.

Hello Mam,

Thank You for writing back!

Any food increases acidity in our body, thus helps in digesting it.And deep fried and fatty food (being high calorie)takes more time and more acid production to digest itself.I said these food do not irritate gastric mucosa, but yes, as compared to other food it causes more acid production to break down, thus indirectly helping the ulcers.

Primarily, the direct effect which a fatty food can do is increase his body weight, which will worsen its diabetes first and then his ulcers.

Hope I made myself clear. If you have no further clarifications, please rate this answer and close this discussion.
