What Causes Parasites Coming Out Of Nose?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: Hi I realized I had threadworms about a month and a half ago and took a home remedy "apple Cider Vinegar" the worms began coming out and I went to emergency care but the doctor there gave a cursory glance and said that I did not have anything. However when I got back home they were appearing even during the day. I went to CVS bought Pin X and took it, it did not help. It just made worms come out of my nose. Thereafter I took Vermox, and then Combatrin 2 times I week apart, the worms coming out of my bottom have eased a lot, but the worms in my nose are still coming out. My Doctor sent me for a stool test and I am awaiting the result. However when I told him I had worms in my nose, he was skeptical. A worm just came out of my nose just about half hour ago, so I need your advice on how to get rid of them permanently please. I know that my Doctor will not believe me when I tell him this. So, I turn to you for help.

??Suspected pinworms, but this should have improved with vermox

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am sorry to hear that your doctor is implying a skeptical approach towards treating you, this is indeed unfortunate. Another thing I would like you to know is that the laboratory analysis is not very accurate and many patients require more than one test to confirm the worms.

I need you to understand that the treatment approach to treating parasites of any kind is to first find the type of worm, and accordingly initiate the medications for treating that parasite.

In my opinion, if the parasites have been coming out of your nose then the parasites are most probably pinworms. Pinworms can be treated with either albendazole or mebendazole. Both of these medications can be taken in a single dose and then repeated in about 2 weeks time. But you have used mebendazole (vermox) which is the most effective approach in treating pinworms. This makes me a little suspicious of the diagnosis, may be these are not pinworms. Thus making it difficult for me to suggest other treatment options sir, I hope you understand why it is now important for me to get the diagnosis from the laboratroy.

But in the meantime, for individuals who are experiencing worms from the nose a nasal cavity wash is conducted which results in cleaning, killing and evacuation of the worms, please do request your doctor for this until we can get the diagnosis (test results) back from the laboratory.

I look forward to helping you further, so please do not hesitate to keep in touch with me. I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply. It has helped me understand the concept of pinworms in my nose better. I just wanted to know if the worm infestation was treatable. I have been reading online that the condition goes on for a long time. I will wait for the lab results and let you know if they found anything.

I will make sure my Doctor realizes that I do have worms coming out of my nose at random. Most of the worms that came out looked like pinworms other than for one, which was a little hard and curled up when expelled. It was also beige in color. I will also insist on treatment for these worms from my Doctor on Monday.

Thank you very much for your help. Its good to know that I can contact you anytime.
Doctor I forgot to mention to you that I began all this worm treatment as I had severe Anal itching at night. Thought I would mention it, so it would be on record. And, also in between taking the PinX and Vermox, I also took Flagyl which caused a bunch of worms to be expelled, and it went on for days. It eased up only when I took Combatrin and repeated the dose after 1 week. Even after the Combatrin there were a few worms coming out of my bottom and the nose worms did not stop. I do hope there is a cure for this, as it has begun to depress me a lot. Will keep you informed. Thanks for your help

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again XXXXXX

Thank you so much for that information.

Yes, I too have experienced some patients reporting pinworm infestations for months on, and unfortunately one young male for more than a year even. Sadly, some worms do not respond as well to the medications prescribed. The individuals who experience poor response with medications find some relief with diet and lifestyle modifications, although none of these have been medically proved and suggested.

They come to observe that certain foods help with greater expulsion of the worms from the body, whereas some types of food and drink just make the environment within more comfortable and suitable for the worms to thrive. This will purely be experimental, but you should give it a shot ma'am.

I would also recommend the nasal cavity or sinus wash/cleanse, as this will help your doctor to see the worms for himself/herself and sent the same to the laboratory for confirmation of species.

Please do not ever hesitate to write to me, I am always here to help you ma'am. I really hope and pray you can get rid of these worms at the earliest.

Best of luck ma'am.

Again Thank you for your response. I have just a couple of more questions. Are there no medications that would get rid of the worms if the ones I have taken don't work. And, if I do the nasal cavity/sinus wash cleanse, will it keep expelling worms? Will my condition be aggravated? I have to go to work and need to know if there will be a lot of worms coming out from my nose afterwards. It would be embarrassing for that to happen. Is there any drastic treatment that I can do for this. If for instance, I get my Sinus's drained under anesthesia at a hospital? Can they take all the worms out? And give me some really strong medication.? Can you tell me why the Combatrin helped a lot to stop the Anal itching why did it not help with the Nasal cavity? Are they still being expelled for the Combatrin? Do you think?

The other thing is this, I did not have any worms from my nose until I took the PinX. It was only after that the worms came out. I also have bloody mucus that comes from my nose when I blow it. Do you think that's what is keeping them alive? I don't have many worms coming out of my nose, just about 1 or 2 at maximum for a day. I will talk to my Doctor and ask hi if I can take the expelled worm to the lab for examination. Will that help?

If a person has poor response to regular worm medication, is there nothing else that can be used to get rid of worms permanently? I am sorry to bother you with this, but I have hardly slept in 6 weeks, and am getting very depressed with this and need to take some drastic measures to get rid of this condition. I will try to explain all this to my Doctor and hope he will take the necessary action.

I am now panicking when you said that this infestation goes on for more than a year. Would you happen to know how he got rid of it eventually? is there any medication that will kill the worms and expel them in the stool, without them crawling all over alive?

I am sorry to ask you all these questions, but this is on my mind night and day, and its now becoming a nightmare for me. I am originally from XXXXXXX Lanka, and have never experienced anything like this before.

I thank you for being so patient and kind answering all of my questions.

Regards,

My apologies for the long response, kindly segregate queries

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

There are medications to treat the worms present in your body like mebendazole and piperazine. But these have to be taken in a particular manner, and even after this only the worms are killed with these medications, the eggs that are already present only die through repeated medications and good hygiene.

In individuals who have an elaborate infestation, the process of ridding the worms may be a very long one.

The nasal rinse is to help evacuate all the worms from the nasal cavity and sinus, which should prevent the expulsion of worms from your nose for at least the next 4-6 hours in that day. The procedure removes all those worms near the nostrils and those which can get to the nostrils soon, and this causes the worms to clear up from around the nostrils and in turn prevent from expulsion for the next few hours. This will not cause an aggravation and in fact would be suitable to do just before work, to save you from the embarrassment and worry the worms could cause you.

Unfortunately all the medications you have used are all there are to treat pinworm infestations, may be we should try using other approaches like extreme hygiene care, repeated medication courses, etc.

Combatrin (with the active ingredient pyrantel) was previously the most effective medication used to treat pinworm infestations and may have (in your case) proved to be more effective than mebendazole (vermox) and albendazole. But combatrin was more effective in helping children with pinworm infestations that required expulsion from the anal cavity, not the nasal cavity. The combatrin works better for the lower gastrointestinal tract and not the nasal cavity.

Yes the combatrin could be useful for expulsion of the worms from the anal region, but we may have to use another drug for the nasal cavity.

May be the PinX helped with expulsion from the nasal cavity, and you just did not notice this before because they were not forced to be expelled by anything, until PinX was used.

Yes you can take the expelled worm from the nose to the laboratory, but usually the laboratory technicians are asked not to believe a patient who brings in a worm saying he/she expelled it from their nose and needs it to be examined. This is because there are numerous cases of patients lying about such things. This is unfortunate because even the ones speaking the truth are filtered off. But I honestly think you should take the expelled worms from your nose to the doctor and the laboratory for analysis.

Unfortunately the only other way is to go about a thorough cleanse and strong and continuous course of medications in a hospital. If you do not mind, then please request for a hospital admission as you will be better treated and monitored (all worms will be seen by hospital staff when expelled). This way your doctors will take you more seriously and work towards treating you sooner and completely. What do you think?

The medications can only kill the worms and not the eggs that have been delivered inside. So even if you kill all the worms, when the eggs hatch (which may hatch at different intervals) you will see the worms again. And by the time you realise, these worms would have even laid more eggs. This life cycle is difficult to address and so in some individuals it goes on for very long (months-year).

Please do not apologise, I am here to help you and always will be. Please feel free to write to me anytime. I will see you through this as long as you need my help.

Best of luck XXXXX.

Thank you for your detailed explanation of my problem. I really appreciated this. I will see what my Doctor has to say, and if the worms continue to be expelled from my nasal cavity and the pinworm infestation returns, I will request a hospital admission. I do hope I can break the cycle. I have XXXXXXX practicing good hygiene for the past 1 month. Hopefully I should be able to break the cycle.

If I need any more advice I will get in touch with you.
