What Causes Paranoia, Sleeping Trouble And Nervousness With Anxiety?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: Greetings doctor Sheppe,
I started feeling anxiety (on and off) about half way through the semester (late October/early November). I get; very nervous, stubborn, paranoid, overwhelmed, and have trouble sleeping. It affects my schoolwork because while I am overwhelmed little things slip my mind, however, this time, I let a major exam slip my mind which caused me to panic severely. I felt seriously overwhelmed, became hard to breathe, and my heart was pounding.

I hardly ever tell anyone I get severe anxiety because I generally become very uncomfortable telling people. Unless they are a medical professional (such as yourself). Which is why I have not told my professor, and even if I did, he would most likely not believe me.
But as a kid, I was severely bullied. As a result, I always try and prove myself to people. I think this is the reason for my anxiety, always attempting to impress people. Subconsciously I think that I won't be accepted by society unless I have something to prove.

I hope I gave you the information you needed, if you require anything else, I'll be happy to answer anything I can.

Thank you for this information. I just need you to answer a few more questions.

How is your mood? Are you depressed? Have you had any thoughts about death, wanting to be dead, or thoughts about hurting yourself?

Have you ever heard voices that may not really be there, or seen something that not might really be there?

Do you feel like anyone is following you, watching you, or trying to hurt you in some way?

How did anxiety lead you to actually forget about this test?

What is your email, so I can forward you a letter requesting this exam mistake be excused, once I complete the exam?

Hey doc,
My current mood is scared (because without this exam I will most likely fail the class, which will probably cause more anxiety). Not to mention I am a bit mad at myself for letting something of this nature slip by me. But to answer the rest of your questions, no I'm not depressed, nor do I think about hurting myself/being dead. I have too much to live for then to leave my friends and family behind. But I would never, ever hurt myself.

I do not think anyone/anything is following me, watching me, or trying to hurt me in any way.

I do believe that anxiety led me to forget about my test, I've been working myself up about my other six classes, that an important exam slipped my mind.

My personal email is YYYY@YYYY

I do appreciate your concern for me, and everything you're doing for me. If you need anything else, I'll be happy to answer it.

Brief Answer:
Private Followup

Detailed Answer:
I will email you a signed document that I hope will help your situation.

I'm sorry you are experiencing these symptoms. These symptoms can be treated, usually with a combination of medication (an SSRI such as Lexapro, Zoloft, or Prozac) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

While I cannot prescribe medication, I do offer CBT on this website via this private link.

I have many patients with whom I do therapy here. Typically how we do it is we open up a new question thread to begin the therapy.

I will ask you questions and you will answer and think about them until the thread is complete (three follow-up questions), and then we open a new thread on a new topic, and continue this process as much as you would like.

I have seen great success using this method. You seem like a very intelligent and psychologically-minded man who could really benefit from therapy, and I believe in time we would be able to overcome your concerns and get you back to feeling normal.

Let me know if you would like to do therapy with me, and I will ask you a question to answer on a new question thread using my private link.
