What Causes Palpitations And Fluttering In Chest?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Apr 2014
Question: Hi! Just writing this I am scaring myself. I used to have problems with palpitations several years ago. I had tests done and they came out to be benign. I stopped caffeine and that seemed to end them. Three years later, started caffeine again about a month ago due to stress, admittedly not drinking much water. Over the last week on and off I have had the scariest, most pronounced, longest fluttering in my chest. It last so long it makes me naseous and too warm and then I get scared and my heart pounds on top of everything else and that makes them even worse! I get periodic hard pounds during the fluttering. Just makes me sick. When I get them to go away I remain anxious that they will begin again. I am on Troprol and Losartan, Pravastatin, and Nexium. I also take one low grade aspirin a day. I am a 43 year old female. I am under alot of stress over the last several years. I am getting a holter monitor tomorrow but almost do not want to go home tonight I am so freaked out. This seems common but that doesn't seem to calm me down any. I am not sure what my question it beyond just getting some information. Thank you very much...XXXX

Brief Answer: Nothing worrisome;wait till Holter/TM test results Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through your query and understood your concerns. I do not see anything worrisome apart minor problems most probably related to: - being under stress - hormonal changes (menopause life-stage) I advise to: - avoid caffeine/energetic/alcoholic drinks - eat healthy - get more physically involved (light exercises by breathing fresh air) - take the medications regularly exactly as per your doctor's prescription - discuss with your doctor to add anxiolytic drug to get relaxed and sleep more until you get the results of Holter monitoring and stress test. Hope it helped! Let me know if you have further queries! Dr.Benard
