Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: I have finished a prescription of antibiotics for a bladder infection. Last pill on Thursday 5-1-14. The bleeding is beginning again and there is some stinging & pain (not there before). I will see my doctor again tomorrow, but should I avoid bathing and stick to just the shower?

Brief Answer:
Consult urologist, shower is better

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking!
Hematuria with associated pain is due to recurrence of resilient bladder infections which are very likely in geriatric age limits with associated metabolic disorders like diabetes.Following are some of the reasons for resilience of this cystitis many of which you have.
Old age
General debility
Renal calculi or obstruction
Recent hospitalization
Urinary tract instrumentation or antibiotic therapy
Diabetes mellitus
Chronic nephropathy
Sickle cell anemia
Underlying cancer
Intercurrent chemotherapy
Hydration to accentuate unidirectional clearance of bacteriuria is recommended, and Drinking cranberry juice (10 oz/day) or taking cranberry tablets are helpful.
Remember minimal handling of genitourinary tract and minimal invasion would be nice. So yes bathing is to be prefered by simple showers. you can take pyodine sitz baths though. meanwhile you can try some antispasmodics for the pain if unbearable.
I hope it would be enough till tomorrow after which your consultation with your primary doctor would make further management plan for this recurrent cystitis.
I hope it helps. Dont forget to close the discussion please.
Take care
S Khan
