What Causes Pain While Swallowing?

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, My name is XXXXXXX and last week (2/26) I took a doxycycline without water and went straight to bed. The next day it hurt to swallow anything and that has continued and it still hurts today. It feels like when you swallow an ice cube. I went to the doctor last Thursday and he said it might just be a throat infection and perscribed some antibiotics (Amox TR-K CLv 125mg). I thought it might be a stomach ulcer because it doesn't feel like a sore throat so I am taking over the counter Omeprazole (acid reducer) and am watching my diet. It still hurts to eat and burp. Should I go see a throat specialist or does the healing time on something like this just take awhile? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Inflammation of the food pipe... continue Omeprazole..

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

Certain medicines (particularly capsules) when taken without water, can disintegrate in the food pipe thus causing inflammation over the mucosa of the food pipe.

Do not worry! You will get better once the inflammation reduces. Continue taking Omeprazole for a week. Drink plenty of warm water; avoid chilled food and beverages, coffee, fizzy drinks and smoking (if any). With these measures, you should be alright.

If you don't get better even with the above measures, consult an ENT specialist for a complete evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
