Posted on Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Question: Hi. I've been having sharp pains under my right rib that has been ongoing for 5 days now. They found a 7mm echogenic nodule on my liver that wasn't there a year and a half ago. Is this causing my pain? Should I be concerned it is cancer?

Brief Answer:
7 mm focus on liver can not be cause of pain - CT will help

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
Read the history and understood the concerns.
To recapitulate: Female/38 - sharp pains - under right rib - 5 days - 7 mm echogenic nodule liver - that was not there a year and half ago - wants to know whether this is causing pains and be concerned about cancer - taking Aleve for pain - scheduled for Contrast CT and EKG ...

Single evidence of a 7 mm nodule alone is not sufficient to say whether this is cancer or not although it will be one of the differential diagnosis.
Hence the need of a CT scan
If this would have been a large one, FNAC of the nodule could have been almost confirmatory. The CT scan would definitely show the probable cause as well as any primary focus of pain and of any other concern like inflammatory or cancer.
So better to wait and see the results of the CT scan and not to worry about the cancer at the moment.

I hope this answer helps you to get an early and correct diagnosis and proper treatment.
