What Causes Pain In Wrist And Arm After Distal Radius Fracture?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: I recently fell and had a distal radius fracture - comminuted. I have been in a cast for a week, and the pain is increasing. The pain is in my wrist, and radiates up my arm. There is no swelling. Is this typical?

Brief Answer:
Get xray done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

Pain after casting and after comminuted fractures is very common.

But if pain is increasing then it means either reduction has been lost or swelling has occurred while limb is in cast. If swelling is not there, then, as in your case the reduction of fragments might have been disturbed.

If pain is increasing then its emergency so I advise you to go to ER immediately and get x-ray done in AP and Lateral view and send me the report.

If every thing is alright then you need is just elevation of limb and rest to the part.

I hope it helps.

Thank you for your timely response. I am awaiting the Rx for an X-ray, and I do, indeed, still have increasing pain. My follow up question is: Could this be caused by "doing too much?"
The pain alternates between the wrist, the forearm, and my elbow. My bicep is sore, as well. I do consider that the bicep soreness could be from compensating, somehow. At times, it can be all of these affected areas at the same time. It can be quite painful. I do have full mobility of my fingers, which I consistently manipulate. It does cause some discomfort.
How should I be caring for this injury, at this point?
Many thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

You are right my friend all this occurs due to doing too much.

You should stop doing work of any type with hand until the x-ray report come.
If every this is alright on xray then the treatment is simply rest and painkillers like 1 tab. aceclofenac+serratiopeptidase. But if the reduction is lost then treatment would be re casting or internal fixation etc depending upon the condition.

Regards,

Dr.Singh.
