What Causes Pain In Upper Leg Post Bilateral Hernia Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: I had bilateral hernia surgery over a month ago, shortly after the surgery I started feeling a sharp pain in my upper right leg. It feels like my femur is dislocating from my hip or locking up. the pain is excruciating and stops me in my tracks, I have never felt this type of pain in over 35 yrs of working out. This usually happens when I am getting up from the toilet or getting into the car. I do light workout on my legs out with no problems, It has gotten worse and worse over the last couple of weeks..What can it be? My doctor said it will get better after, but it has gotten worse.

Brief Answer:
The pain is related to recent surgery for sure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The pain is definitely related to recent surgery. Please note that during inguinal hernia surgery there is a risk of catching a nerve with a stitches. There are 3 nerve branches located in groin area what makes this risk quite significant.
Such nerve entrapment with a stitches can last 3 months after a surgery or even longer.
It is always a risk that hernia can reappear somewhere between the tissues and the mesh. In such case physical activity or coughing should worsen the pain.

If you have had spinal injection during anesthesia, this can be also a reason of such pain, especially that it somehow radiates to right leg.

There are two options for you:
1. You can wait next 2 months and see if the pain will get worse or not.
2. Have at least groin ultrasound now to see if there is no fluid collection as well as no hernia recurrence. You may also consult neurologist to see if there is no problem with spine.

If the pain wont get any better in next 2 months, MRI of pelvis would be a good idea.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
