What Causes Pain In Upper Leg, Hip And Buttocks?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: I am having pain 5 out of 10 day and night and the pain shoots to instant 9 out of 10. It is in the back of my upper right leg, my hip, buttocks. I assume sciatica. But it's more than shooting. The pain behind my leg is constant. Sitting, standing, especially laying down and trying to roll over, can't lay on my back. I use ice and sometimes heat. Went to the chiropractor 2x this week. Used his heated water massage bed. I'm alternating ibuprofen and Vicodin.
..very frustrated and in pain 24-7
Edit... He had adjusted my hip, but I didn't feel or hear anything move. It did seem to feel a little better but the relief didn't last long at all.
I have CONSTANT pain in the large muscle going down from my buttocks to the back of my knee. Sorry I can't remember the name of that muscle...glute?
I have the Vicodin rx for fibromyalgia. I hardly ever use it. But now I'm taking 2every 4-6hours 24hrs. It takes 1hr to work and only last about 2hrs.
I weigh 205 and have belly fat. I've recently lost 30#s. If I remember correctly, the pain started the day after a really good work out of walking/jogging. I thought I was just sore. But then thought that I just took too long of strides and maybe over stretched it. Either way, it's been going on for 4weeks now and I haven't walked let along try to jog.
I hope you can help me. I don't know what else to do. Ice, heat, rest and pain meds just are t doing it.

Brief Answer:
Need to see a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

You need to see a doctor. You seem to have neuropathic pain and will need stronger medicines like gabapentin etc. You do not live in pain and get help please. You have already used the trial period of one month. After one month of back pain, tests should be done.

You will also need to be tested for condition like osteopenia, disk protrusion, vertebral fracture, etc. Thus you will need tests like X-ray, MRI scan. If conditions like osteoporosis are found then you will need specific medicines for it. Also try orthopedic mattress. Do not lift heavy weight.

Hope it helps.

Hi!
Thank you for responding. I forgot to mention that I am on Gabapentin. I was having severe nerve pain in my foot about 2 yrs ago. My meds are:
Cymbalta-60mg 2x day for fibro and depression
Lamotrigine 200mg 2x day
Gabapentin 100 mg 1 in am: 2 in pm (makes me sleepy)
Ambien 10 mg
Prevacid 30mg

The fibro is so frustrating. It multiplies the pain x100 :( Everything I do that has minimal pain for someone else is very painful for me. So I understand the nerve pain aspect.
I don't mind seeing my doctor, but thought I would try this service to see if it may just be a pulled muscle or a tear in a tendon ??? not sure that is even possible. I also remembered that 3 months ago, I stepped out of our truck and my leg gave out. The pain was definitely in my low back and shot down the sciatic nerve. I stayed in bed for 24 hrs, used ice, etc...went to chiropractor which seemed to help. BUT the pain was in my left leg. Now its down the back of my right leg. It doesn't hurt in my low back, just my hip sometimes. But it is a constant burn on the back of my right leg.
I'm concerned about an MRI. If I haven't met my deductible, i will have to pay 2-3,000

Brief Answer:
Read your description

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Read your description and can understand your situation.

A pulled muscle can be palpated. A tore tendon would be swollen.

I was thinking more on the lines of vertebral fracture or disk protrusion. For now you can get an X-ray done. MRI can be done later when you can afford it.
Since your nerves is getting impinged, steroids may be advised to reduce the swelling. Steroids have some side effects but can be taken for a small duration. Pain control should be adequate.
If vertebral fracture, then its cause should be taken care of. Vitamin D and blood calcium levels should be checked for deficiency. Nothing much to worry as these can be handled if they get diagnosed. Without X-ray, we can only guess about the diagnosis.

So you should see your doctor and get whatever treatment you can get done.

You should also keep your waist circumference in normal range. Big abdominal girth may cause it. Some mild exercises especially stretches would be useful. Back exercises can be taken under physiotherapists guidance. Low calorie diet should be taken. Sedentary lifestyle worsens it. Prolonged sitting also worsens it. Improper posture also worsens it. For now keep the posture that you are most comfortable in.

Hope it helps.
