What Causes Pain In The Gums After An Upper Endoscopy?
Question: I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday. I was awake all night with burning and pain in my gums and lips and tongue on the right side of my face. Very severe. Advil wont relieve the pain it is that severe and feels tingly as well. What is this from?

This is not uncommon after upper endoscopy especially if this was done under general anesthesia. In such cases there is a tube that is placed into throat and may irritate mouth and throat. Also, endoscope may do same thing and it is usually lubricated with lidocaine or other local anesthetics which lead to numbness of this area. After the anesthetic stop working,you may feel pain for several days more. You should take diclofenac or ibuprofen analgetic and take plenty of fluids. Wish you good health. Regards
