default
Posted on Sat, 11 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

I delivered on 27th feb. it was a C-sec delivery. I suffered from acute pain in both my nipples during breastfeeding for the initial 10 days. May be was caused by sore nipples.
Now my right breast is pretty comfortable to feed my little one but the left one hurts badly. There is some kind of pain when I feed baby and also when the breast rubs against clothes. What could be causing this? I have been using nipcare ointment but condition is not improving. Please help.

Also I feel piercing needles sensation in my breasts after feeding baby. this pain is more acute and uncomfortable in left breast. what causes this?

Brief Answer:
This is due to milk let down reflex and is common in many a women.explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to health care magic,
As you have delivered recently and have taken to breast feeding, it is common to experience breast pain especially at the nipples . this is seen especially in cases of cracked nipples and you are rightly using nipcare ointment for that. It is to be applied after every breast feed after cleaning the nipples with XXXXXXX warm water. This moistens the areola and makes it less susceptible to cracking and then pain.

You may also feel fleeting pain in your breasts when your milk lets down. The letdown reflex, also called the milk ejection reflex, is set off by the hormone oxytocin. It stimulates the muscle cells in your breasts to squeeze out milk. Generally in the initial days, Oxytocin is released whenever your baby feeds in the first few days after she's born. Later on, just thinking about feeding your baby can trigger this hormone release. You may even find that your breasts leak when this happens.

Different women feel the letdown reflex in different ways. You may feel:
slight tingling, or pins and needles, immense pressure and slight pain, ache or discomfort,or even nothing at all.As time goes by, and as you get used to breastfeeding, you'll probably become less and less aware of this. This painful letdown reflex usually fades in the first three months of breastfeeding.
Second most important thing you should focus on is the latching of baby to the nipples to allow better sucking and less pain and local injury to nipples. If your baby latches on well each time he/she feeds, your milk supply should quickly settle down to match her needs.
For relief , you may continue using nip care ointment and also practice hot fomentation twice a day to help you relieve the pain early.
I hope i have been able to answer your concerns in detail,
Wishing you good health,
Regards
