What Causes Pain In Lower Back?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,

Two days ago, I was picking something on my right side while sitting on chair, while sitting near my feet. It was very light, on coming up. I suddenly got a jerk in my back. Don't know whether I pulled a muscle or a vein. I applied volini. On sitting a particular portion it suddenly hurts a lot. While if I have support or if I lean back it doesn't hurts. While on leaning forward it hurts. And on sitting straight there is a particular position where it does hurts a lot. The pain I feel is on lower back on slightly right from the left. At that particular position where it hurts a lot. The pain becomes uncontrollable. Please help me out here.

Brief Answer:
Muscle strain likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Back muscle strain is one of the MOST common causes of acute to severe lower back pain like you are having. Lifting a heavy object, twisting, or a sudden movement can cause muscles or ligaments stretch or develop microscopic tears.
TREATMENT: Some general guidelines can help you to reduce lower back pain. These are as follows:

1) Take adequate bed REST with maintaining posture. Individuals who do not regularly exercise to build strength and flexibility are more likely to experience recurrent or prolonged lower back pain.

2) Alternate Hot water bottle or Ice pack can help to relieve most types of low back pain by reducing inflammation.

3) Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and muscle relaxants are quite useful to reduce inflammation and back pain. You need proper prescription from your doctor.

4) Exercise for Lower Back Pain : It is a key element of almost any lower back pain treatment plan. You may contact with Physiotherapist regarding this. It can be done only after the acute pain subsides with the help of medicines.

It includes 3 components: aerobic conditioning, stretching, and strengthening. The exercises are done through a controlled, progressive program to build more strong and flexible spine.

5) Epidural Steroid Injections - deliver steroids directly into the painful area of the lower back to reduce inflammation. It doesn't heal the components of the back, but often provide enough pain relief to allow patients to move, exercise and heal.

I hope this answers your query.

Thanks for your reply sir!
I do average amount of workout started recently, though being a work profile such that I do have to sit a lot. For the medicines you suggested, can you recommend few names. I will do the rest and ice pack/hot water.
Or any gel, which relaxes and helps heeling up the muscle.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can start with Tab. Tolagin 8mg or Mahagesic MR 8 mg twice a day after meals. Using Relaxyl gel will also help. In case the pain is persistent then it is best to consult an orthopedician for a physical examination and confirmation of diagnosis.
Hope my answer is helpful.
