What Causes Pain In Lower Abdomen When I Lay Down?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Sep 2015
Question: 3 times in the last 8 months I will be laying in bed and start to get a pain in my lower abdomen that I also feel in my rectum area. It progresses quickly and the pain worsens, to the point I eventually get sweaty, dizzy like I am going to pass out. If I get down on my hands and knees and put my head on the floor the pain soon eases and it doesn't happen again for months. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Common causes need to be looked for first

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Before going for rare diagnoses, the common causes for such lower abdomen pain should be addressed. A stone in the urinary tract can present with such severe pain as can IBS however IBS pain is milder. Inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis can also be related with cramping and pain. A urinalysis, Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis, ESR, Complete blood count, stool for ova and parasite and routine exam should be advised in consultation with your doctor. Local examination to look for possible anal fissure, external hemorrhoids and a Digital rectal exam can also be done as part of the assessment. Treatment and further management would depend upon the findings of the above workup.

Wishing you best of health
