What Causes Pain In Hand And Back When Diagnosed With Vitamin-D Deficiency?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Dec 2015
Question: Hi,

My Daughter is suffering from Vitamin D deficiency. She has been given a course of Calciron Ganules 60000 Mu fro 6 weeks. After which her Vitamin D level has increased to 73.

But after 1 month she has started complaining again hand pain and back ache. I git her Vitamin D and Calcium test done. Now it has again reduced back to 26.

I am little confused what could be the reason for reduction in Vitamin D level so frequently. Are we missing anything and Vitamin D level is decreasing because of some other reason. Is there any other tests that are required to be conducted.

Please suggest.

Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the details and can understand your concern.
Here I have few queries like
If there is any prolonged history of loose stool?
Is the child getting any other medication?
Is her diet rich in vitamin D?
Was she getting any maintenance dose of vitamin D?

There are few conditions where the deficiency of vitamin D persists even after treatment.Like if there is loss of vitamin D due to prolonged loose stool, any medication like phenytoin or rifampicin which decreases the level of vitamin D or inadequate maintenance due to poor dietary source of vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency is usually associated with raised paratharmone (PTH)level. So I would suggest you to get a serum PTH level done to corroborate the deficiency of vitamin D.
As the repeat test is showing vitamin D level which is insufficient I would like to repeat the 60000 ucalcirol XXXXXXX one each week for 6 weeks and then to supplement daily with 1000 u for 4-6 weeks.
Also give her diet rich in vitamin D like cod liver oil, egg, fish (if non vegerarian),dairy product or food supplemented with vitamin D.
Also give adequate amount of protein as it helps in better absorption of vitamin D.
In few cases vitamin D level remains low even after multiple dosage of vitamin D in that condition ultraviolet B skin therapy is to be given.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more doubts.
Wishing for your child's good health.
Regards
