Posted on Wed, 1 Oct 2014
Question: I was diagnosed with cellulitis on the left ear 1 week ago. taking clindamycin hcl. I now have scabs in my scalp so I am assuming it has moved there also. with cellulitis, is it common for the hair follicles in your scalp to be painful also? When I go outside and the wind blows my hair, it feels like pins poking my scalp.

I have attached a pic of my ear lobe with a sore still there. I have not been diagnosed with diabetes. I did lose my job 2 months ago and have had stress from that. My hair follicles in my scalp are very sensitive. Just wanting to know if this is all part of cellulitis or possibly some other issue. I have not had any lab work performed due to no insurance. Some areas around my ear is sensitive to the touch also but not as painful as my scalp.

If I have shingles in my scalp, does it itch? If I just have the tingling and sensitive hair follicles with no itching, would it tend to be more of cellulitis? Are shingles more of patchy sores with many in one area that itches?

Brief Answer:
Upload photo. Problem does not look like shingles.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Thank you for your query.

-Please upload photo of the lesion.

-Shingles spreads along with nerve distribution so I guess it is not shingles (Herpes Zoster). It forms a blister which is very painful and burning.
- Cellulitits is characterized by swelling, pain, redness. It is mostly localized to hair follicle.

If you have anything else to ask I will be very happy to answer that.
Thank you,
Dr. Arun Tank

Thank you for your continued support. Having no insurance, I do not want to go back to urgent care if not necessary. A few more questions...I basically still have cellulitis. My medication Clindamycin HCL runs out tomorrow, Sunday. I still have scabs in my scalp and feel tenderness in my hair follicles. Do I need to go back to the doctor or is this something that just takes time and have to deal with it for the course of the illness? Does Cellulitis take a while to go away? I would say it is not spreading or getting worse but the headache from the hair follicles is getting very annoying. How much time should I give this?
