What Causes Pain In Groin Area After Lifting Heavy Weights?

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Jan 2015
Question: I developed a sharp pain in my right groin after consistently lifting heavy boxes while working the preload shift at UPS for 6 hours.
I can barely bare any weight on that leg and it's been almost 2 weeks since the injury. What could be causing this?
After 2 days the pain started radiating down my leg and into my back. Hurts to cough as well.

Brief Answer:
It could be a groin hernia. Get it examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
You should get it examined by your GP or a Surgeon. It could be a groin hernia or a muscle pull. Either way you should get it checked up and preferably get an Ultrasound of the groin to rule out an Inguinal or a Femoral hernia.
Continue your Ibuprofen for the pain till then and I usually prescribe my patients Tab Pantoprazole 40mg on empty stomach when they are on pain killer medicines to prevent acid injury to stomach.
So do let me know what happens and feel free to ask any other queries that you might have on this issue.
Take care.

Had it checked at the doctor again. Now they are saying that yes it may be a groin hernia. The type you cannot feel. She said to ice it 4 times a day for 10 minutes at a time, rest it, stay off it for a while, no strenuous activity, and gave me more ibuprofen. Said that if it still hurts in 3 weeks to go back and she will request an ultrasound on the groin.

Brief Answer:
That would be fine. If the pain is bearable you can wait for Ultrasound.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Good to hear from you.

The Doctor you consulted was a GP or a Surgeon?

I feel you should get an Ultrasound done if the pain is severe. If you feel relief in your pain then you can wait for the three weeks advised and then get the Ultrasound done. But, you must get it done to be sure that there is no Hernia.

Take care and do not worry.
The Ultrasound will be able to tell what it is.

Do let me know once it is done so that I can advice you further and guide you with the treatment.
