What Causes Pain In Ear After A Trauma?

Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,
Im a 27 year old female. 2 weeks back i had a fight with my husband and in anger he hit on my left ear. It was very painful in and out of my ear for few days. I couldnt sleep on my left and the pain increased on brisk walking and bending of head. The pain was radiating to my head and neck but disappears after sometime. Also, a sharp pricking pain comes from inside which lasts for few seconds. There was no bleeding or any fluid seen yet. Now after two weeks my pain has reduced considerably but i can feel some kind of discomfort in my ear
I haven't consulted any doctor yet and didnt take any medications. Is it fine if i leave it like that ? My husband is equally worried about me.
I have also read in internet that it might heal by itself in 3 months. Is it true?
Hope you give a solution to my problem

Brief Answer:
Have to consult doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,

Trauma to the ear can result in rupture of the ear drum. This may cause bleeding in the ear, pain and hearing loss.

Usually such injuries heal very well, but rarely the ear gets infected and in such cases may take longer to heal.

You should consult an ENT specialist to know the extent of injuries and also to rule out infection which is a definite possibility since you have been having symptoms even after 2 weeks.

Do not worry, even if there is infection it can be easily taken care of by antibiotics and ear drops.

Till you see a doctor plese follow some general measures -
1) Keep your ears dry and do not let water to enter your ears.
2) Do not probe your ears with buds etc to clean them, do not attempt to clean your ear, it can introduce infection in your injured ear.
3) Use decongestant nose drops like otrivin. These nose drops open the eustachian tubes and help to ventilate ears from inside, which in turn help in healing. Instill 3 drops of otrivin in each nostril 3 times daily and follow it up with steam for 6 days.
4) Drink lots of fluids and avoid using airconditioning and fan.

Brief Answer:
cotton in ear

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

It is dangerous and unwise to take prescriptions of drugs online without consulting a doctor.
It is illegal to prescribe medicines online as well.

You can insert a ball of cotton smeared with vaseline just before having bath and remove it immediately after bath.
