What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Legs After Delivery?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Sep 2017
Question: Hi yes, I am asking this question for my daughter, 32 who just had her first baby 11 days ago by c section,
since delivery she has had swollen legs and feet. She was told to keep them elevated and to drink alot of water, yesterday when she went back in for a check with the obgyn she told her to keep doing the same and to drink tea and lemon, I though that tea was a dehydrator, and I also feel like by now the swelling should be gone, could there be other issues that they should be checking into now.

Brief Answer:
Is she having any other problem!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

If only the legs are swollen, there is no problem. If she has other symptoms such as difficult breathing, excessive tiredness, etc., then she will need to be evaluated. For now, decreased fluid intake, raising the legs, and exercising often.

Also, kindly upload an image of these legs for review. This way, I can provide more personalized and insightful helpful tips.

Brief Answer:
All will be fine!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed the attached image. This is acceptable and will not cause any further worries. I believe this is more related to hormonal changes than an ongoing disease condition. Monitor only and keep me updated in addition to the above recommendations.

I wish you well.

The Dr now has prescribed a water pill to help, it is two weeks tomorrow she had her baby and this seems like it's taking a long while, I hope it wouldn't be something else what other test can be done to rule out another problem with her feet and legs

Thanks

Brief Answer:
That will be too aggressive!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Swelling of lower limbs after delivery is not totally unexpected. Fluid retention during pregnancy and in the immediate period following delivery accounts for this. If she however has more symptoms such as difficulty breathing and severe fatigue, it might point to a heart problem which will require investigation. At this time, we are not there yet. Taking further measures to investigate would be aggressive and that will most likely not be of added value at this time.

I recommend monitoring closely. Resolution would be spontaneous. If something else comes up, then report to me for further evaluation and guidance.

I hope this helps. Keep me updated and feel free to keep the exchange on if you so desire.
