Question: I am a 39 yo female 5ft 4 160 lbs Never smoked drink 5x's a year I began walking again for exercise and to remain healthy. I usually walk 3 nights a week 3-5 miles. I have noticed everytime I walk within the 1st mile I get extreme pain behind my right knee and it radiates to front. I take Topamax 50mg 1x daily and paxil 20mg 1x daily. I panicked that it was a blood clot although there is no discoloration and not warm to touch. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Could be early arthritis. Least likely a clot. Could be Baker's cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

It appears that you could be having early symptoms of Osteoarthritis.

If you have pain and swelling behind the knee, it could be an arthritic process causing a cyst from the knee joint called Baker's cyst.

It's least likely a blood clot.

It is best to get an Xray of the knee joint in standing position and also an ultrasound of the back of the knee if you feel any fullness or swelling there.

Avoid walking long distances, squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs, kneeling.

Apply warm packs to the knee for relief.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
