Question: I must have twisted my ankle a week ago. It is sore and there is some swelling. The swelling has decreased some after applying ice packs nightly. Should the swelling and soreness persist this long?

Brief Answer:
Because the swelling is reducing, I recommend you continue treatment!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain and swelling that you have reported. I have reviewed the information fully. Swelling would normally not regress completely within a week. Because the swelling is decreasing, It means we are on the right path and making progress. There would be no immediate need for further aggressive measures at this time. I generally recommend rest, ice and raising the leg when sitting so as to facilitate fluid drainage. If there is much pain, I would recommend that you take Tylenol or Ibuprofen at dosages recommended by your pharmacist.

In all, it is normal for some swelling to still be present. Because the swelling is regressing, it is a good sign. Monitoring would be the next best step at this time.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
