Brief Answer:
Possible deep vein thrombosis to determine by Doppler ultrasound...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

1. You are saying that the blood vessels on the back of your lower left leg have risen to the surface. Can you please provide a photo of them so I can evaluate them further?

2. From what you are saying, the raised blood vessels are due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A further Doppler ultrasound of blood vessels of the legs is advised for further evaluation and to determine the stage of blockage.

3. With regards to the pain you are having in the top of your left leg, it is related to DVT. Please bare in mind that during DVT, the blood is not circulating well in your lower limbs (left leg); thus, metabolites (end-products after cells metabolisms) are remaining in the periphery due to sludged blood. This is making you to feel pain.

Another possible explanation to the pain you are feeling is diabetic neuropathy taking into account you're diabetic although under control. However, if I was your caring doctor would evaluate your leg's blood vessels first then, run neurological examination.

4. Until you get the requested exams done, I advise to:
- keep your legs raised as much as you can
- avoid standing or sitting for long periods
- wear DVT stockings (you can find over the counter) especially when you walk to help your blood vessels shrink
- apply heparin lotion locally when you see the blood vessels on your leg

Hope it was of help!
