Posted on Sat, 13 Sep 2014
Question: Having pain on my lower right side for over few months now. The pain is above the appendix area. My doctor wants me to have Hidascan. Will I be exposed to lot of radiation since I have had CT of chest, CT of abdomen pelvic, Nuclear stress test in the last 16 months. Also, what do you think the pain is coming from. I do have frequent urination problem also (12-14) times a day.

Brief Answer:
Go ahead with the HIDA scan

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
Sorry to hear about your problems,
I have gone through your history.
The pain above the appendix area could be because of kidneys gall bladder or small or large intestines.
Your CT abdomen has ruled out small intestines or kidneys as a source of the pain.
Sometimes a CT scan might not pick up chronic inflammation of the gall bladder and that is why your doctor has advised a HIDA scan. In case the HIDA scan positive it will indicate that the gall bladder is the cause of your pain, in which case you will need surgery.
HIDA Does have a radiation risk but it is far less than a CT abdomen > The dose recieved in HIDA is 5 times less than that received in a CT abdomen.
I would suggest that you go ahead with the HIDA as the the benefit outweighs the risk.
Hope this helps
