Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: I had unsafe sex with unknown partner 8 years before. After 1 year or so i have diarrhea and was checked for HIV which was negative. However after that i continued to have some times diarrhea and also cold which does not get cure early. I also feel flue like symptom after sex with my wife. Hence i did the tridot test which is negative few months ago. However i am also worried for my wife. she is also having diarrhea occasionally and also have lost few kg. Please advise whether we both are safe or we need to get checked again.

Brief Answer:
Most likely Acid peptic disease, Stool exam to rule out infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr. XXXX,

Welcome to health care magic.

I have gone through your query and I can understand your concern regarding exposure to HIV.

But an episode which happened 8 years ago is not significant in this scenario.

If you would have been infected by HIV eight years ago you would have manifested by now.

Moreover, your tridot test for HIV antibodies is negative.

Antibodies against HIV are produced within three months of exposure and remain positive until last stage of AIDS.

Your symptoms and your wife's symptoms are suggestive of some gastrointestinal disturbance.

Most common cause of diarrhea in your age is acid peptic disease leading to indigestion.

I would also suggest a stool examination and culture to rule out any gastrointestinal infection.

For now, I suggest a high fibre and low fat diet.

Drink adequate water per day, at least 3 litres per day.

Avoid spicy food. Take Tab Pantop 40mg twice daily before food for 7 days.

There is no need for any testing for HIV.

I hope I have answered your query satisfactorily.

Please do not hesitate to get back if any more queries.

Thanks.
