What Causes Nose Bleeding Along With Black Stool?
Question: Hi Dr. Rynne and thank you for responding. I will be 59 in a month and haven't had any kind of medical check up since 1982 when I got out of the navy so I might have other symptoms that I am not mentioning but I am mentioning every possible symptom I know of. On Friday, I developed a slightly irritated throat and a low intensity occasional cough (with one moderate intensity 3 cough burst early on) spaced between 15 minutes and a couple of hours which I thought was a runny nose and maybe the beginnings of a cold. I also noticed I had some clotted blood in my nose. Yesterday (Saturday), the symptoms continued and I noticed I had a black stool. Actually it was a cross between a black run from my rectum, a black stool and arguably diarrhea. I am NOT getting any red blood from any part of my lower body. I have had the 'run' in the past but never black. Previously, it went away when I eat sufficient dairy. I went to sleep last night and woke up after about 3.5 hours with a run of fluid on my lips. Assuming it was a runny nose, I discovered I had blood on my hands, face and pillow case. I would estimate a few ounces. I stayed up and had a slight trickle of blood from my nose that went away after a few minutes but the other symptoms continued except when I went back to sleep 4.5 hours later (I waited because I didn't want to go to sleep and have that happen again), I slept for several hours without a bloody nose. One other symptom that I didn't think was significant until Saturday afternoon and that is that my stomach feels a little peculiar and I feel an off and on trickle in my throat but I don't know if this is saliva or blood (or my imagination?). I suspect that continued while I was asleep. I don't think it is phlem. I remembered I blew my nose a few times Saturday afternoon. I just checked the trash and there was blood then.....for better or worse, I didn't check the results at the time because I have always assumed it was going to be phlem. In other words, apparently everything to do with my throat and nose is related to blood. I apologize for the time-consuming response and hope it makes sense and didn't include a bunch of irrelevant info. I didn't figure on telling someone verbally. Thank you, XXXXXXX P.S. I added the possibility that the trickle feeling in my throat is 'my imagination'.

Sorry for a late response the physician intended was out and unavailable to respond. I take the opportunity to respond to you.
First of all you have a blood leak in the nose, the reasons could be many. The same blood is trickling back into the throat, the reason why you found it in the trash.
A lot of blood was swallowed and went into the gut. This got digested with the stomach juices. This gives a black color to the stool. When something like the blood irritates the gut, it hurries and gives you diarrhoea kind of stool with blood and black color.
You need an immediate evaluation of the symptoms that you have now.
I am glad that you were quite healthy all these years but any new symptom needs evaluation.
In my opinion you need to get bleeding profile for bleeding time, clotting time, Platelet count etc. You also need blood pressure evaluation.
If you poke or touch the nose you are more likely to bleed intensely. So refrain from doing so.
