What Causes Nausea With Stomach Gas?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Nov 2014
Question: For the last month I have had nausea with stomach gas along with a sinus infection I have taken a general antibiotic which didn't help, now I am on Clindamycin HCL 300 mg 3x day. I have to wait 4 months to see a specialist. I don't think I can wait that long. Suggestions? Thanks so much. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Gastritis vs sinusitis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM

You are concerned about the length of time to get a gastroenterologist to see you for stomach problems. This is not unusual but in the mean time to treat the nausea and stomach pain I recommend going on a low milk diet and possibly even a low gluten diet. Lactose intolerance can frequently cause large amounts of gas along with pain and cramping.

If you have not already tried I recommend using Tagamet or Pepcid for the pain and if that does not help then Prilosec of nexium.

For the sinus infection if this is going on for more than 1 month then you may have a chronic sinusitis. Treatment would be a long term antibiotic but clindamycin is not the drug of choice for long term treatment. Clindamycin has a high risk for causing something called clostridium dificille enterocolitis. This is where the antibiotics kills off the good bacteria in your colon and then a bad bacteria, Clostridium grows and causes severe diarrhea.

To properly treat the sinusitis I recommend you seek an ENT and have CT scans of the sinuses to determine if you truly have chronic sinusitis before embarking on long term antibiotics.

I do not have any pain. I am nauseated until I can bring up the gas. I forgot to mention that I am taking Ondansetron HCL 1/2 before meals, but the nausea seems to be almost always there. I also take a probiotic. Sounds like one just has to wait it out. Thanks for your suggestions.

Brief Answer:
Long wait

Detailed Answer:
I agree with you that will have to wait to see a gastroenterologist. Your main problem is the nausea and gas. Taking ondansetron is only marginally helping. Have you tried Reglan or metoclopramide? This is a prokinetic agent and may help reduce nausea.
