Posted on Sat, 21 Feb 2015
Question: Hi, I have a 15 month infant. He has nose bleeding one and off. Sometimes it's very less but sometimes its really high. We live in XXXXXXX We consulted doctors but we were reassured that he might have had an adenoid infection or be meddling with nose using nails. Is there anything we should be doing proactively. His bleeding occurs maybe twice a month but the heavy bleeding happened in Sep and now on XXXXXXX Kindly advise if we should do anything pro actively.

Brief Answer:
Kindly get a thorough ENT assessment

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Nasal bleeding is occasionally seen in toddlers and usually occurs due to following reasons
1. Pricking of nose with nails
2. Presence of adenoid hypertrophy leading on to nasal congestion.
3. Rare possibility of coagulation and bleeding disorder

I would suggest you the following

1. Tho examination and reassessment by ENT Surgeon

2. Bleeding and coagulation profile

If the above two are normal then there is no cause for concern.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.

Take care

Thank you doctor. A couple of questions

A) What is the minimum age for this assessment?
B) How is it done as the child is quite restless during examination?
C) Further, are there any other symptoms for coagulation and bleeding disorders besides nasal bleeding?

The child is otherwise active, gaining weight and height and has a good grasping ability. He eats well and plays well. He is only 15 months old.

Brief Answer:
General examination by ENT Surgeon will be reassuring

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Going by description of nasal bleeding occurring twice a month , it's unlikely to be due to any significant cause. It could be seen in toddlers . A general assessment by ENT Surgeon will be reassuring.

Any spontaneous recurrent bleeding without associated trauma to nose either by nasal pricking with nails, possibility of bleeding disorder needs to be ruled. Bleeding disorder usually present with spontaneous recurrent bleeding from any site with trivial trauma or no trauma .

Do not be worried , a general examination by ENT Surgeon will be reassuring.

Take care
