What Causes Muscle Atrophy After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jul 2016
Question: Blood donor with HSV 2. QUESTION
A blood donor unaware of being infected by HSV 2 because it has never manifested any sores or lesions in her life time WILL the HSV 2 show up when giving blood?

What can cause muscles to atrophy?
Nov. 2014 left hip replacement.
March 2015 FREE FELL off of bike directly onto the operated leg incision.
When getting off the bike to stop for an intersection, I put my left leg down to hold me up. There was ZERO strength.
March 2016 had a bone scan done. Left leg continued to be weak, i.e. still cannot stand on my left leg to put on trousers or shorts without holding on to something. Radiologist report detected an infinitesimal movement of the prosthesis creating unstable body imbalance.
OTHER contributing factors. Lower back discomfort. Possible spinal column pinched nerves.
Through pt work outs I have learned that my left glute is soft and not firing. Doing dry needle therapy to get it started.
SO muscles have "possibly atrophied" I have heard mentioned twice. Once by an orthopaedic surgeon and once by a pt therapist as the source of my LEFT operated leg's weakness NOW a year and a half after the
Nov. 2014 procedure.
PLAN to DATE
Re-do the LEFT hip with a more secure prosthesis THIS July 29th. The bike FALL most likely jostled the
prosthesis. Instead of it grafting naturally with the bone it is now forming a fibrous grafting, i.e. which is unstable.
SO what is causing my left leg to remain weak? ATROPHIED muscle or something else.

Brief Answer:
it can be due to wrong position of prosthesis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have assisted your case. I think you are having weakness of abductors at hip. These are gluteus Medius and minimus. This is common after hip replacement and it can be due to following causes.
1.Wrong implant position
2.Spinal nerve compression( rare)
3.neuropathy
4.Muscle atrophy due to surgical scarring
As your doctors has decided to re do this surgery so now you do not need to be worried about this. I hope this time with a better implant position you will get good muscle strength. Your blood transfusion is nothing to do with this weakness.
I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if their is any other followup questions.
thanks

DID NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION!!

After 3 yrs of vaginal and oral intercourse my partner developed an out break of genital herpes. I LEARNED I have HSV 1.

I cannot recall ever having blisters or lesions around my mouth.

QUESTION

In both cases the HSV has been dormant for sometime.

# 1 What can trigger outbreaks?

# 2 Can vigorous genital oral sex be a trigger?

# 3 Now that there has been an (HSV 2)outbreak. What is the likelihood of another one? (Now using a latex condom)

Brief Answer:
HSV attack is not triggered by sex or blood donation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There is no report which suggests that sex or blood donation can trigger HSV attack. Usually following are common triggering agents.
1.High fever
2.Stress
3.Lack of sleep
4.menstrual cycle
So maybe it was stress and not blood donation that triggered attack. As you want to know what can cause repeat attack, it can be due to above mentioned factors. Surgery can also trigger an attack.
As you want to know causes of atrophy of gluteus Medius and Minimus muscle it is most likely a post surgical impact. It can be due to wrong implant positioning or scar around muscles. Revision surgery may make muscles better but you may continue to have some weakness.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if their is any other followup questions.
