What Causes Multiple Abdominal Lymph Nodes In Infants?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Hello Doctor, My 3.5 year son is suffering from acute stomach for whole night [last 2 nights]. Earlier he has been having constipation history [going for stool pass on alternate days]. Yesterday as he was in acute pain we visited nearest paediatrician , he suggested to have ultrasound and it says multiple abdominal lymph nodes less than 10 mm. Paediatrician says it is normal and he prescribed Zifi100, Ibugesic and Anafortan. Is this serious cause.. should we refer another paediatrician..?

Brief Answer:
You can wait as USG report is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Acute pain abdomen may be due to medical or surgical cause. Surgical causes(anatomical abnormality of intestine) of acute abdomen are considered to be serious.Medical causes should be managed with the medication with a close observation of the child.

As ultrasound abdomen does not show any anatomical abnormality like malrotation, appendicular enlargement, dilatation of bowel loops, enlarged gall bladder/pancreas/appendix; surgical causes are ruled out.

I have few queries
1) Did he vomit?
2)Was he suffering from fever?
2)Was there any blood in stool?
3)Was there any difficulty in micturition(dribbling/burning)?

Urinary tract infection, intestinal infection are common medical causes of acute abdomen.
Sometimes lymph node enlargement due to any infection may cause pain abdomen. USG did not show significant lymph node enlargement(>10 mm is significant). So this cause has been ruled out.

Your pediatrician has prescribed antibiotic and analgesic. That will take care of pain and infection.Continue the medication as advised by your pediatrician. If pain persists/increases or there are other clinical symptoms like vomiting, loose stool consult your pediatrician.
Waiting for your answer/queries.

Regards
