What Causes Mucus Like Discharge In Urine?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Apr 2015
Question: I had my IUD removed 3 weeks ago and developed a kidney infection. I also started a detox with my nutritionist. She had me using herbal, natural products and Niacin. I didn't realize I had any sort of infection because very few of my symptoms coincided with the ones I read about. I was given a shot of Rosefin and put on antibiotics. I still don't feel 100%. My urine came back showing no bacterial growth which I am presuming rules out possible E-Coli. Today I had a large amount of mucus like discharge, it was clear but alarmed me. I have never had a kidney infection before, so all of this is new to me. I also haven't had a period in 8 years due to two IUD's. I am just curious if the discharge has anything to do with the IUD removal or if the IUD removal has anything to do with the kidney infection. I am having an ultrasound tomorrow on my abdomen also to rule out any damage. Thank you for your time.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Do you mean a urinary tract infection, or a proper kidney ( renal infection ) ?
An IUD slightly increases your risk of having urinary tract infections, and chronic / recurrent UTIs can cause renal infection.
But an IUD straight off causing kidney infection is a real rarity.
Also, regarding the discharge, yes I assume you had the MIRENA ( hormonal ) IUD, so removing or inserting it can cause hormonal fluctuations, leading to change in the vaginal discharge.
All the best
Please feel free to discuss further.

Hello,

Thank you. I was diagnosed with a kidney infection, not a UTI. My symptoms were bloating in the abdomen, lower back discomfort, nausea, low fever, frequent urination that was clear with some foam. It ran rampant for 1 week as I thought I had some sort of flu or ate something that upset my stomach before finally going to the doctor. There was no blood or burning sensation during urination. Just abdominal swelling, gas, etc.

Yes, I had the Mirena IUD. The one removed was my second one. I have never had a UTI before, at least not to my knowledge. I am curious as to how long this infection will take to go away. I am still having back discomfort and somewhat foamy urine; on my 8th day of antibiotics. The fever seems to have dissipated but I am really tired and uncomfortable. I am curious as to what could have possibly caused this being that I did not test positive for any bacteria. I had an ultrasound today, the results should be available hopefully tomorrow.

Thank you for your time.

Detailed Answer:
Well how was the kidney infection diagnosed , if the test did not show bacteria ?
Generally a renal infection is intensively treated with 14 days of antibiotics, and then it takes another couple of weeks to come back to normal.
Thank you for your appreciation.

It was determined based upon my symptoms and the amount of pus I had in my urine. I was given 14 days of antibiotics. I am just wondering if I could have something else going on that I need to look into?

I don't have copies of them but can request them. The ultrasound is not yet available. Thank you

Detailed Answer:
I wonder if the new detox regime did not suit you ?
That combined with the hormonal withdrawal effects of the Mirena ?
what if you actually had no kidney infection in the first place ?
The antibiotics would only worsen the indigestion, bloating etc.
Please request copies and upload them.
An abdominal scan is the next step as it will really clarify what is going on.

This is what I have been wondering. It is so strange to me. I started seeing a nutritionist several months ago and have since completely changed my eating habits. No sugar, gluten free; very healthy diet. In October of 2014 I went to the same Urgent Care for asthma. They did an EKG on me and sent me to the ER as they found my heartbeat to be irregular. I have a slightly prolonged QT interval at 451. I also recently learned that I tested positive for the MTHFR and have one copy of C677T and one copy of A12983. I actually just posted a question about this on the forum about 20 minutes ago. I am working with a nutritionist who ordered these tests. I suffer from severe anxiety and depression and don't want to be on medication for the rest of my life, so I am desperately trying to get to the bottom of my issue. I am 5'6 140 lbs, exercise regularly and eat healthy and it seems that I am having a plethora of problems as of the last 6 months. I have read that the MTHFR can cause serious issues but I am not sure if it affects the kidneys. It seems that soon after I started the detox which included supplements and Niacin that these issues started, with the bloating, illness, etc. My blood work and labs don't show anything severely irregular either. My glucose is slightly high 106 and seems to be gradually rising. My doctor said that could be due to the detox but no one seems to know for sure.

Hello again.
See, MTHFR mutations are so common that they are no longer considered mutations.
They are subtle variations in the gene, depending on your ethnicity.
I would not worry about it.
Even if they are causing problems, first they would lead to elevated homocysteine levels.
So it is simpler and cheaper to measure the serum homocysteine levels, and if they are elevated, supplementation could be done.
The cardiac issue is clear, so no problem there.
Anxiety and depression to a great extent are combated by thorough counselling , behavioral modification, yoga , meditation, practised relaxation therapies etc.
I admire your goal to be medication free, because medications are only temporary, and in most cases, come with their own cohort of miserable side effects.
I would advise Vitamin D level testing too, deficiency of Vitamin D can cause depressive symptoms.
Also, get your TSH and hemoglobin levels checked.
There is nothing in your urine report to suggest kidney infection, seriously, nothing.
I wonder if this is a wrong diagnosis.
The symptoms of bloating etc are very common with a new regime, such as the detox that you are undergoing.
Blood sugars are also often affected by unknown components of new diet regimes.
Why dont you try and stop the detox and all medications ( after having the relevant tests done to see if any supplements are needed ) and see how your body feels after 2 weeks.
Of course, dont leave the antibiotics midway, complete the course, and then give yourself 2 -3 weeks.
For the anxiety / depression, please get hold of a dedicated counselor who appreciates your yearning to be drug - free and helps you similarly.
Take care.
