What Causes Movable Lump On Outside Of Eyebrow?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: My 4-year old daughter had a swollen eye for the past two days, which we thought was due to a bug bite. The swelling subsided today, but then we noticed a palpable, movable lump about 10 mm in diameter on the outside of the eyebrow (away from the bug bite site). This was not there yesterday. Throughout the day it has gradually discolored (reddish-purple). The size has not changed in the past few hours, but it is getting more discolored. She has not bumped the area. The pediatrician said it is an infected lymph node stemming from the bug bite, which is on the other side of the eyebrow by the nose. He prescribed antibiotics. I am questioning this diagnosis because there are no lymph nodes where her lump is.

Brief Answer:
lymph nodes

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.
Lymph nodes drain a particular area of the body.
They need not be present at the site of infection.
In your child , I consider it could be two things
1. Lymph node which can swell up on the other side of the eyebrow.
2. Separate lump due to infection spreading.
Of these first option is more explainable.
The color will change slowly back to normal.

If the new lump increases in size or becomes painful, then option 2 is more likely, to be treated with antiseptics.

Do not worry.
Wishing your child speedy recovery.

The lump has always been tender to the touch. Additionally, she is complaining about a general headache. It has not increased in size. She is taking bactrim. How long should we expect it to take the lump to go away or begin decreasing in size?

Brief Answer:
It will take atleast even a week

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The swelling might take even a week to settle.
Sometimes it might subside or burst to let pus or secretions out.
If not settling in a week, or if it becomes more painful, consult your doctor.
