What Causes Mild Vertigo And Headaches?

Posted on Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Question: I have a question to get rid of my fear hence raise this query. I have had mild vertigo (pushing, ear discomfort) kind of problem some time back in 2012 XXXXXXX and consulted GP and they gave betaserc tablets after one week symptoms cleared.
In between I used to have the same problem at very minor level due to stress, lack of sleep, etc. I do not bother about much. But when I had similar problem in last June'14 it was almost same like last time but this time vertigo effect very less but more of head heavy when I turn or shake or change the position. This time ear discomfort very less or almost none. Same doctor said due to mild level it was not like last time but due to cold or ear infection. I took betaserc 2 weeks but then did not see any change. I consulted neurologist , he advised MRI Brain . Result is 100% normal. with this I just ignored. but later 2 days it was severe headache discomfort and had fever. doctor gave antibiotics and become normal within 2 days. but the mild discomfort at shoulder neck head was there. I thought of having a neck shoulder head massage. Massage man touch some triggering point and told me there is a stiff. he continued applying more pressure and during that time I had some pain with electric current flowing from the neck to ear . he repeated for 5-10 minutes and asked me to come on a weekly basis. after 2 hour of massage I casually touched at the left ear and had numbness kind of sensation. I worried because of massage some nerve damage like that. it remain for about one week but slowly back to normal but not 100%. in between I myself realised whenever I touch or turn both sides of the neck, same kind of electric flow passing from neck to ear. and ear becomes like getting numbness. numbness may not be correct it is something like. do not know how to express.
I referred to massage man. he said it is because of stiff and he demonstrated exactly touching at the location he made me to feel the same electric current flow. I then avoided going to see him. in between I had some very mild burning sensation only at the left ear cheek side when I expose to kitchen or sun hot. In between it become very normal also. now after almost 2.5 months, I only have the symptoms.. relatively different touch sensation at the area below the left ear/cheek , something like sticky kind of feeling, very very mild burning sensation. Other symptoms are absent such as electric flow during shaking or turning head or pressing some points which earlier I used to have, no heaviness. but mild discomfort at neck still continues..... some thing is disturbing me even I DO NOT SEE ANYTHING THAT ALARMING... PLEASE CLARIFY MY DOUBTS...

As below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Your history and symptoms point to a cervical spine origin.

2. The mild vertigo, the neuralgias and other symptoms may just be due to the normal changes associated with aging.

3. If you are diabetic or hypertensive, these mild symptoms may linger due to diabetic or hypertensive neuropathy.

4. Medication for neuralgias differs from routine anti-inflammatory medication. A neurologist will be able to help you out here

5. No other major cause is expected as your earlier examination and MRI Scan is clear.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Dear Doctor,

Thanks very much for your reply.
just to give some history pls. note I am type 2 diabetics since 16 years. fairly good control. HBA1C at every 3 months for all through this period are ranging 5.5 to 6.7%, on only 3 occasions it was beyond 7%. No other complications except routine mild temporary discomfort due to diabetic. otherwise ok.

No hypertension.
other history is GERD, BACK PAIN not more often at least 2-3 times every year I may have. but only apply voveron emulgel ointment.

tables I take , glimmer-1/2 mg, morning and 1/2 mg before dinner.
razo-20, VSL#3,LONASEP , some vitamin tables and for last 1 year I started d-aztor 10 mg for cholesterol. (only LDL ranging between 100 to 125 mg/dl, while other Total Ch,HDL , TRIGLYCEREDIES ARE NORMAL.

Once after MRI normal, neurologist has prescribed some tables, which I avoided taking although doctor said no side effects or no harm to diabetics. but then I decided, because of taking other tables... those tables that neurologist/epileptologist DOCTOR prescribed for 2 months are Julddllil(T.ULADELIL? can not read and not sure if this is correct...), PETRO 0.5, T- PRZITICOLUS, (AGAIN NOT CLEAR...) NUHENZ,. HE SAID MY MIND IS TOO DISTURBED BY THINKING ALWAYS SOMETHING , and in my profession to be very sincere so restless mind thinking.... which is of course correct... anyway I thought of updating this for you to suggest or advice if anything further..... sorry to butt in again, I consulted in the beginning of year 2014 XXXXXXX ENT,HEAD & NECK SURGEON MR. JANAKIRAM, TRICHY for mild ear discomfort and tick tick kind of sound in ear, mild cracking sound when I turn around head ... he tested both ear and diagnosed bilateral normal hearing sensitivity . also prescribed tables... sobracort, T. STUGERON 25 MG FOR 15 DAYS, WHICH ALSO I HAVE AVOIDED NOT TAKEN... FOR YOUR INFO....thanks

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Your diabetes seems to be well under control. That is a good sign that any diabetic neuropathy that may have developed over the years will be minimal.

2. It is good to hear that there is no hypertension. The GERD and occasional back-ache are common symptoms and not a cause for worry.

3. Get your Cervical Spine X-rays done.

4. I recommend that you review your current medication with your physician. It will be better to taper off the atorvastatin (d aztor 10) and the lonazepam (lonazep) which have musculoskeletal pain, cognitive effects and dizziness in their side effects. The more the medications, the higher are the drug interactions and side effects.

5. A medication such as amitriptyline (Tryptomer) or carbamazepine (Tegretol) may hep in the short term. However these should only be taken under the strict supervision of a physician.

6. Get a Tympanogram (Impedance Audiogram) done to check middle ear pressures (mild ear discomfort). The tick tick sound may be due to Tinnitus or Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD). The mild crackling sound that you hear when you turn your head may be due to cervical spondylosis.

7. You may upload your Cervical Spine X-rays and other results here for further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
