What Causes Metallic Taste In The Mouth And Burning Sensation In The Tongue?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: I've had a metallic taste in mouth, burning tongue, gums, back of mouth around tonsils is red for several weeks. It started off slowly and became progressively worse. Went to walk-in-care 2x, can't seem to get an answer. No signs of oral thrush. Not taking any meds, not on any treatment of any kind. Burning will be worse one day and the next day barely noticeable. It seems to be the worst late in the day and may taper off in the evening. I don't smoke or drink. I am not eating anything spicy or with high acid content. No coffee, citrus, spices, etc. which does seem to make it worse. I'm using a child's toothpaste without mint, no orals rinses except for occasional salt water. I have not had any dental work recently and brush 2x a day and floss. I am 1,000 miles from home and at a loss. I'm ready to go back to the walk-in-care but I don't know what to tell them to check for. I won't be back in my home state for another 11 days. I am so worried this could be something serious. Please advise.....

Brief Answer:
Stay put and observe only for now!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. I have reviewed your information fully and nothing really stands out as a possible cause. However, it is not uncommon in practice to observe similar symptoms without a clear diagnosis. In most casse, I recommend that my clients monitor further and interestingly, most of these symptoms regress with time, spontaneously and with no medical care. I will want you to adopt the wait and see attitude doing nothing else like medications or special mouth products. I am confident this will resolve. If this fails, then at that time we might have gathered more information to be able to investigate any new leads.

This has no immediate threat to life. There is no ned for a walk in care service at this time. If need be, get a regular doctor appointment and discuss this further. No rush as this constitutes no emergency or impending emergency.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
