Posted on Thu, 11 Jun 2015
Question: Hi,
I'm a long time sufferer of IBS, GERD, you name it ....with constipation. I'm having a flare-up with soreness in lower abdomen, a lot of right side discomfort. up into my ribs...like pressure, some twingy pain and a lot of gas. I have to eat mostly carbs in order to feel half decent. Have had this in the past but it is lasting for about three months and is wearing me down.

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

How do you know this is IBS? Have you had any tests done to confirm it?

Please note that such symptoms at your age (over 50) can be caused by some large intestine tumor. That is why colonoscopy is the first test which should be done. You may have no symptoms until it has started. This is typical for large intestine problems. Especially for some tumors.
Other possible reasons of such problems are chronic bacterial infection, hypothyroidism, medicines (hypertension) or just bad diet.

Please consult your doctor as soon as possible. Consider having colonoscopy. Its really important to rule out the worst possibility first. If it will be done, you may start checking other mentioned reasons.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy in November and everything was OK. I do have hypothyroidism and am on Paxil, Xanax, synthroid, atenolol, atorvastatin, and protonix, bentyl as needed.

Brief Answer:
Stool test and stool culture test should be done.

Detailed Answer:
This is good you have had this tests. The next step should be TSH level check, stool test and stool culture test. You should also start probiotic intake and consider with your doctor Rifaximine intake. As you do take antiacids, small intestine bacteria overgrowth can be the case. Rifaximine should help in that matter.
