Brief Answer:
Exercises would help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the symptoms of your friend and would like to reassure you that these do not suggest any serious disease.

The symptoms are most likely due to muscle spasm at the lower back or mild disc disease.

As of now, back extension exercises, done under the guidance of physiotherapist would help him.

If symptoms persist despite this, then, he should consult a neurologist.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
