Question: My mother has diabetics issue..since past 6 months or so, her sugar levels used to be in the range of 150-170. Upon doctors advise(Apollo hospital) she started taking 'Metformin 500' 1/2 tablet daily once...Ever since she started taking this medicine the sugar level came down in the range of 140-155 for a long time...However since last 2 weeks the glucose level is further decreasing from 130, 121, 120......102 (today)...

Is 102 glucose level appropriate for the age of 57?

Brief Answer:
Blood sugar levels are normal for her.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM. Thanks for your query.

The normal range of blood sugar for fasting is 70 to 100 mg / dl and post prandial is 100 to 160 mg / dl.
Less than 70 mg / dl is hypoglycemic and more than 200 mg / dl is hyperglycemia.
In your mother's case the blood sugar values are under normal range for her age.
You don't need to worry.
More over metformin is less likely to cause hypoglycemia as it mainly acts as insulin sensitiser.
I would advice my patient to not miss any meals with anti diabetic drugs.
If the blood sugar reduces further than metformin may be stopped with the consent of the treating doctor and subsequent follow up of blood sugar.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
