Posted on Fri, 29 Jul 2016
Question: I had a LFT done 4aphys. My direct bilirubin came back .8 the AST/ALT are normal. This was not a fasting test. I took benadryl & doxylamine succinate OTC to aid w sleep. Will this affect it? Ive also read that coffee enemas help detox liver and create bile. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Direct Bilirubin low

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about a low direct bilirubin. This is nothing to be concerned about. This shows that your liver is working extremely well to clear bilirubin from the body. You are very healthy. No concerns here

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

No, my direct bilirubin is .8 the normal range is 0-.3. The total bilirubin is 1 which is normal. That range is 0.3-1.9 mg/dl

Brief Answer:
Lab differences

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for clarifying your lab results. My lab here lists your levels as normal. But even saying that your levels are not high enough to warrant any concern. This is still statistically within normal range. If you want to reduce or improve your liver function then reduce you use of OTC medication especially benadryl and the Doxylamine which can increase liver function. The coffee enemas do nothing to improve liver function or detox a liver. They only help clean out your colon.

I hope this clarifies my answer. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

Thank you. Im out if the US and the lab i am using is in Trinidad and i have concerns with their lab in general. I need a good clearance for a pre deployment medical for Department of defense. I have stopped taking the benadryl and doxylamine succinate. As i did a little lf research and saw they are potential causes. I know the half life of benadryl is 45 mins and the DS is 6 hours. Im hoping that if the lab needs to be redrawn after a few days of no OTC meds i should be good. Thanks! Im just a bit concerned as i have a bit of knowledge as i am a critical care paramedic. So it caused me to question. Thanks again!
