What Causes Low Appetite In Infants During Teething?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: I'm writing about my grandson, who is 3-1/2 months old. He was recently found to be lip tied and tongue tied. They performed the surgery to release the lip and tongue, and at first he nursed fine. That lasted a week or so, and he slowed down. Now he only nurses what immediately lets down, and doesn't want the bottle either.

Could there be something in his digestive system that makes him uncomfortable so he doesn't want to eat? He also is teething... is it possible that teething will reduce his appetite?

Brief Answer:
Feeding

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
It is unlikely that the surgery has anything to do with his decreased appetite. The teething, however, can affect appetite. But that should last for too long.
In any case, the most important factor is his weight. If he is gaining appropriate weight, we can allow these fluctuations in appetite and we do not have to be concerned. If his weight gain is not as it should be, it could be a problem.
The first thing I would do is make sure of his weight gain. If there is an issue, I recommend consulting with your doctor. If not, we can be reassured and we don't have to worry.
