What Causes Low TSH After Taking Vit D?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: hi Sir ,
i am a patient of Hashomotos disease ( underreactive thyroid ). i am on 75 mcg of levothyroxine , and have started to get pain in left eye and constant watery and redy eye . Went to optholmologist and he confirmed that eyes are dry but eye are all ok , except pressure in both eye is 21.

the only difference is , i have started taking Vitamin D 5000 IU as i was Vitamin D deficient was 25 before and now i feeling much better with no hypothyroid symtopms. however apart from feeling better , my eyes are giving me problems.

could this be that Vitamin D has increase absorption of Thyroxin and i am becoming hyperthyroid and therefore getting these symtopms.

one thing to note here , my recent TSH Was 0.74 , which was never that low before taking Vitamin D , i was always 3.4 3.8 without vitamin D.

however on the other note , my ee pressure was tested on dec 2013 it was 14.5 and now it was 16 1st week , 17 second week and 21 this week.

Brief Answer:
These symptoms indicate thyroid eye disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to health care magic.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that you are having Hashimotos disease and on treatment with levothyroxine with recent addition of Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is known to stimulate the action of TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone. However it is known to have interference in absorption of thyroxine.
The symptoms of dry eyes indicates onset of thyroid ophthalmopathy and it is because of decreased blinking of eyelids. The treatment is by use of artificial tears eye drops.
The increase in intraocular pressure particularly with gaze upwards indicates onset of thyroid myopathy affecting the extra ocular muscles of eye.
Thyroid ophthalomooathy is known to occur in Graves disease commonly but it can also occur in Hashimotos disease also. It can occur with hyper or hypo or even with normal thyroid status.
Hence you require evaluation to rule out thyroid eye disease by clinical examination and investigations like CT scan which show thickening of the extra ocular muscles of eye.

Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist and get examination as I have advised.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
You may need to decrease the dosage of thyroxine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir,
Thank you for the follow up query.

It is good that it is confirmed that you are not having thyroid eye disease as examined by two ophthalmologists. The dry eyes which is because of excessive use of computers called as computer vision syndrome will respond to use of artificial tears eye drops and by avoiding continuous use of computers by taking frequent breaks in between.

Vitamin D plays an important role in treatment of hypothyroidism and it is useful in treatment of autoimmune disorders resulting in hypothyroidism as in Hashimotos disease. Vitamin D stimulates the action of TSH and it usually does not affect the thyroxine absorption. The stimulation of the action of TSH would have caused these symptoms of thyroxine over activity.
The symptoms of heart pumps feeling called as palpitation, loosing weight are typically seen in case of thyroxine over dosage.

Hence I advice you to consult your endocrinologist doctor to decrease the dosage of levothyroxine as you are having few symptoms of its over activity.

But the increase in the intraocular pressure progressively cannot be explained by the absence of thyroid eye disease. Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist for recheck of the intraocular pressure and to rule out glaucoma as a cause for raise in the intraocular pressure or to rule out thyroid eye disease.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

I have no family history of glucoma snd no was told by all optemetrist and opthslmologist that the all the things with regards to glucoma and thyroid eye disease are not there.

Do u think over dosage of thyroxine would be casuing high pressure in eyes and also red eyes as.?

Brief Answer:
Thyroxine can cause high pressure in eye.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up.

Overdose of thyroxine is known to cause increase of or high intraocualr pressure. But first the common causes like glaucoma and thyroid myopathy need to be ruled out.
Red eye can be caused high thyroxine levels and also by dry eyes and this can be treated by the use of artificial tears eye drops.

Since you are meeting your ophthalmologist on Monday again you can discuss with him the likely cause for raise of the intraocular pressure. After examination he can rule out both glaucoma and thyroid myopathy. If both are ruled out then it will be most probably from overactivity of thyroxine.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
