What Causes Low SGOT And SGPT Levels?

Question: I am a 75 year old female. I have heart mummer, asthma, COPD, and other lung problems. I no longer smoke. Recently, I was diagnosed with B type flu. I was very weak, had breathing problems, etc... Nevertheless, my family doctor finally was concerned that I have lost weight without intending to over the past 3 years. I have a chronic pain in lower abdomen, as well as have problems with many foods. I also have diarrhea fairly regularly. However, no black stools. I have seen a digestive specialists who has run blood test and a CT scan. I just received the blood work. my ALT SGPT is a negative 5, and my chloride level at 94. What does a low ALT SGOT level mean, and how does the Chloride level play into the equation. I am 53 sand weigh 90 pounds. I have never drank. Please help me to understand what ALT SGOT low level signifies and what does a high chloride level indiciate.
I have no way to upload any reports. Also, I do have high cholestral, which can remain under control by diet.
I am so sorry. My Chloride level is low. It is 94.

Low SGOT and SGPT may be due to many causes like vitamin B6 deficiency, alcoholism, early fatty liver, etc. It is generally a benign finding and patient need to evaluate for these factors. Perhaps you can discuss about these factor when you get to see the doctor.
It is good that you don't drink.

Low chloride may be due to prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, drugs like bicarbonate, corticosteroids, diuretics etc. From your history, I see you been suffering with diarrhea fairly regularly. It may or may not be a cause. Discuss about it.
Low chloride treatment is correction of underlying cause. Therefore you need proper evaluation before correction.

You are rightly suggested for PFT as you have respiratory problems.

In a nutshell, the causes of low ALT SGOT as well as chloride are not serious.
