What Causes Loss Of Teeth?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: My husband is losing teeth. It's almost as if they are dissolving. His dentist has suggested that the narcotics he has been prescribed are the cause. When we posed this question earlier this month, the doctor's reply said that dental problems was not a side effect of narcotics. If that's the case, what's causing the loss of teeth? Could the reason for the loss of teeth be related in any way to the problems that he is having with his stomach?

Brief Answer:
Gum infection, narcotic drugs, scaling

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
As far as the teeth loss is concerned, I have two possibilities.

It can be because of the gum infection(because of deposits over the teeth) leading to bone loss around the teeth and resulting in teeth loss and considering your husband age, it might be normal physiological shedding also.

The other possible cause can be because of the drugs like narcotics, which makes the bone weak and resulting in teeth loss.

Regarding your stomach issues, if your husband has gastroesophageal reflux disease or repeated vomiting, then the acid content in the vomitus can dissolve the teeth and result in teeth loss.

No need to panic, consult a oral physician and get it evaluated. If the teeth loss is secondary to gum infection, get the teeth cleaned(scaling and root planing).

If it is because of narcotic drugs, then consult your physician and ask for a replacement of the drugs.
I hope my answer will help you, take care.
