What Causes Loose Stools After Every Meal In Infant?
Question: Hi,
I have 4.5 month old baby. Recently doctor suggested to start him with macalvit syrup 3.5 ml. However I notice loose stools after every feeding ( he is completely breastfeed ). Is this a side effect of the syrup? What should I do?

Thanks for writing to us.
Usually calcium supplements like macalvit cause constipation rather than loose stools.
So definitely the loose stools is not related to the supplement.
At this age it is mostly viral infection of the gut.which causes loose stools.
Don't worry.
This viral infection will settle on its own in a few days.
No antibiotics required.
Continue breastfeeding frequently.
Ensure your child passes urine atleast 8 times daily
If baby becomes dull or urine output falls take him to nearby pediatrician.

Thank u Dr XXXXXXX for the reply. I will starting my office in few days hence wanted to start him with top feed. When can I start with it? I was start it today but not sure if I can with his loose stools in place.

Boiled vegetables can also be started
You may also give cerelac or nestle rice as food.

Thank u for ur quick reply Dr XXXXXXX One more query for top feed what can I opt as a option for milk? Should I go for formula or can cow's / XXXXXXX milk be given? This will be along with my breastmilk.
