What Causes Loose Stool In A Child?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: We have twins (girls), they are 7 months old. Since yesterday both are passing watery stools, its almost liquidy. One of them passes stool as soon as she drinks milk and the other as soon as she finishes feeding solid food.
We tried to give them Nestum instead of the regular cerelac and Ragi but we have not seen much improvement.
We are making sure we keep them hydrated well by feeding milk (lactogen) frequently. They have not been on mothers milk since they were two months old.
Please advice.

Brief Answer:
usually viral infection will settle soon

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Usually loose stools is viral infection at this age.
No need to worry.
It will settle in a few days. Antibiotics are not recommended unless there is blood in stools.
What I usually recommend for such babies in my clinic
1. Probiotic like bifilac one XXXXXXX twice daily for 3 days
2. Zinc drops 0.5 ml once daily for 14 days.
3. Ors solution like electral in sips frequently every 15 minutes.
4. Continue feeding milk including lactogen.
Ensure both of them pass urine atleast six to eight times a day.
This will indicate that the hydration is being maintained

If they become dull with poor intake and less urine consult with your pediatrician immediately.
Wishing your babies good health and speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun
