What Causes Light Brown Discharge And Spotting During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 15 May 2015
Question: Hi Dr XXXXXXX

My wife is 13 weeks pregnant now. She is seeing light brown discharge and spotting ( no bad smell, no cramping ) when she passes urine and wipes. She had an ultrasound scan today just when she saw the discharge and spotting. The scan was normal. There was heartbeat and baby was moving.

As she experienced 3 miscarriages previously, we are concerned. Should we take any precautions ? Since she became pregnant, we are practicing abstinence and she is not lifting any weights. She is a student so she drives for about 30 minutes every tuesday and thursday.

Thanks and Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Take complete bed rest

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing..

Is the placenta in the normal position? Is it low lying? What is the length of the cervix in the scan?

I would suggest to take complete bed rest.. Avoid driving.. You can suggest your doctor to give a progesterone injection now.Restart the progesterone tablets daily for 1 more month..

Looking forward for your reply.. Good day..

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Thanks a lot for your continued support. My wife is 13 weeks 2 days pregnant now. Today we went for another ultrasound scan. The baby is doing good, but my wife's cervix length is 2.32 cms.

The doctor prescribed 200mg progesterone vaginal suppositories per day. We are going to high risk pregnancy clinic next week to determine if cervical cerclage is necessary to prevent pre term labour. I want to check with you about what precautions we need to take to prevent complications in this pregnancy. This is the first time we entered second trimester. Prior miscarriages were all in first trimester.

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Get prophylactic cervical encirclage

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing..

Cervical length is towards lower side.. Is she having any pain abdomen?

Get a cervical encirclage at the earliest.. If she has pain medications to relax the uterus should be started.. Complete bed rest is advised with foot end elevated.. Only for toilet she need to get up..

While travelling to hospital travel with seat in slanting position.. Minimum pressure should go to uterus..

Please donot make her panic or stressed up as it can affect her health..

Hope I have answered your query.. Feel free to ask any doubts.. I will be happy to help u.. Good day..
