What Causes Leg Pain In A Diabetic Patient?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I have pain in both legs. I'm diabetic, but my blood sugar levels are in control. My legs have a dull achy feeling, especially painful when I first get out of bed. I can barely walk then. My diabetic doctor took me off crestor and said to take B-Complex supplement. I also take gabapentin because I'm under pain management for sciatica, but that is not the problem with this pain in my legs. I walk every morning, but take an oxycodone and gabapentin a good hour before I go out because they hurt so much when I first get up. Otherwise, they hurt throughout the day, causing me to walk slowly and in some cases unsteadily. Should I see a neurologist?

Brief Answer:
yes, see a neurologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
You may be dealing with a diabetic neuropathy and a neurologist would be the best person to diagnose and treat this. The gabapentin and B vitamin supplements are good for you to be taking.
It also could be coming from your spine since the nerves in your legs originate in your lower spinal cord.
The neurologist would be the best person to do an exam and determine what testing needs to be done.
They may consider an MRI of your lumbar spine or nerve and muscle conduction studies to determine where the problem lies.
It is good that you are walking, because these things tend to get worse if you are not moving around.
I hope you get relief soon,
Dr. Robinson
