What Causes Left Sided Rib Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Apr 2014
Question: Been bothered by rib/sternum pain on left side of chest on and off for a few months. Family doc says it's "costochondritis". EKG was was OK. Chest radiograph report says : cardiac silhouette is within normal. No focal lung infiltrate is seen. There is no pleural effusion or pulmonary vascular congestion. Impression: no acute cardiopulmonary disease. Question - no acute disease - does that mean there is no chronic disease etc. (do I have anything to worry about?) Question #2 - this costchondritis -- does it last for months like this? male - age 59 - electrician thank you

Brief Answer: Please refer to the following answer... Detailed Answer: Hi, I read your query very carefully. For the first question: The results show that, there is no acute heart or lung disease and you have nothing to worry about for the moment. This however doesn't show that you haven't any chronic disease. Further examinations are needed to exclude the presence of any chronic disease. So i recommend to run the following examinations: - Cardiac ECHO, - Stress test, - Holter monitoring, - Functional respiratory test. For the second question: Yes what you are experiencing is more often associated with costochondritis and the pain may last for months. Hope it was of help! Dr. Benard p.s: If you have more concerns don't hesitate to ask me again
