What Causes Late Periods With Negative UPT?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I'm 24 years old. My last menstrual cycle started XXXXXXX 2nd and went off XXXXXXX 7th. I had unprotected intercourse on the 10th. I took a pregnancy test the day my period suppose to have started. It was negative. A few days later, I took another and that too was negative. Around the 6th day I was late, I went to the doctor and had a urine and blood test done, both were negative as well. Should I worry about being pregnant or is it just my nerves? I still haven't seen my period. I missed a period last year in May also.

Brief Answer:
If it has been more than 3 weeks, you are not pregnant.

Detailed Answer:
I can understand why you would feels nervous. But urine pregnancy tests turn positive within two weeks from the possible date of conception.

The possible date of conception would have been within 3 days of the day you had unprotected sex. So add 14 days to that - gives you 17 days from the day you had unprotected sex.

So if you were negative on a blood test and urine test and these were done 3 or more weeks after the date of unprotected sex, then you are not pregnant. I am not sure what day you went to the doctor, but if they were done 3 weeks or more after possible date of conception, then you are ok. If not, then repeat the test now just to be sure.

I would advise that you get on a regular form of birth control, such as the Pill, the IUD (they are much better now than in the old days), or Depo. At the very least you will want to keep a supply of condoms and spermicide around. It will save a lot of worrying for the future.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you so much! I actually started the birth control pill Orsythia yesterday on the 12th, hopefully it will regulate my cycle and keep me from worrying otherwise.

Brief Answer:
Glad to hear it.

Detailed Answer:
Yes that is good. Orsythia should not only help regulate your cycles but if you have a history of heavy periods this should help lighten it as well.

If you have no other questions you can go ahead and close this discussion (and rate it).
