Detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Varicose veins causes pain especially in the area where superficial vein connects deep vein. The pain is usually caused by wrong direction of blood flow.
Varicose veins increase also the risk of vein thrombosis. This condition gives also pain, however hardness in the vein area and hard calf are very characteristic.
Obesity do not help with veins condition.
I suggest your husband to have veins Doppler ultrasound. If the vein is hard and swollen, this test should be done as soon as possible to rule out thrombosis. If the vein is soft, this test should be scheduled.
If the veins insufficiency will be confirmed, surgery should be considered.
In a meanwhile he should wear compression stockings during the day.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
