Brief Answer:
Appears to be depression.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Yes, inadequate sleep, loss of interest in all activities, lack of energy, change in sleep pattern, poor concentration are all early symptoms of depression.

2. Suicidal intentions are also present at times in depression and needs to be dealt with at the earliest.

3. If you are unable to change the pattern or involve him in activities, counseling and medication will be necessary. He might need medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like citalopram. Monitoring for 2-3 weeks closely is necessary for improvement evaluation.

4. Meet your doctor for further evaluation and medication prescription. Psychiatrist or neurologist would be better.

Hope it helps.

Brief Answer:
Not only medications, family support and professional counseling necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.

Not sure about the type of specialist met by your father.

Yes, he will require counseling over the issue at present. Depression cannot be treated by medicines alone. He will require family support, professional counseling along with medications.

If his symptoms are improving, not to worry. If not, meet a psychiatrist, based on which further management is possible.

Hope it helps.
